TIP OF THE MONTH - February 2010

Even though I have now lived in Switzerland for 20 years in total (10 in Zurich, 6 in Basle and 4 in Geneva) I still love to experience Swiss carnival time.

Basle Fasnacht runs from Monday morning 4 a.m. Feb 22 until Wednesday Feb 24. The highlights are "Morgestraich" at 4 a.m. on the Monday and the processions which take place on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. A treat for the children is to go on Tuesday afternoon for the children's procession. You can stand by and be an observer but take a big plastic bag with you because you will get given lots of sweeties and chocolates from the children on the floats.

Luzern carnival takes place on Thursday Feb 11 starting at 5 a.m. with a main procession at 2 p.m., on Monday Feb 15 with the same timetable as Feb 11. In addition there is the children's procession on Tuesday Feb 16 at 2.30 p.m. with a final procession on the same day at 7.30 p.m.

The Zurich carnival is scheduled for Feb 19-21 with a parade on Sunday Feb 21 at 2.30 p.m.
